G'day gang

In my recent note about the Spam Survey I mentioned the following:

Of the 9 respondents 5 (plus me!) use the excellent Mozilla Thunderbird client
3 still use the Virus-prone Outlook Express so we will have to gang up on them and convert them to the wonder of Thunder!

One of our members Avril is a long time Apple Mac user who has just splashed out on a new Windows laptop
Here is her reply:

OK, convert me!  I have a clean slate with a new Windows computer.  Why should I use M. T.? How easy is it to use compared with Outlook Express? If converted, is it a free download?

I have downloaded Firefox, but cannot see any advantages over Outlook Express, but assume there are hidden advantages.  Can you advise?

Microsoft Works came with the computer, but as I have yet to try it out I am not sure whether it will read Microsoft Word.  Will it, or should I go ahead and try and download Open Office?

Cheers,       Avril

Hi

Ok 3 questions to answer here

Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is a replacement for Internet Explorer or other browsers
There are many advantages including security and the option for "Tabbed Browsing"
Do a quick google search for the advantages of Firefox and you will find more information than I can write out
Here is a link to the Firefox site listing some of the features and advantages
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
And here is some more details, help and FAQ
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/

Most of us are using Windows XP which we would have updated to the latest release of Internet Explorer - Version 6
There is no doubt that Firefox is safer and better than IE6
However Microsoft have felt the competition and after 2 years are finally updating IE to version 7
There are betas available to download
The differences in features and security between Firefox and IE7 will be much less
Reference Link:

So if you are a confirmed IE fan then download the latest beta release
(via windows update - select the option for 'show beta products')
But why not try Firefox - it's free, small to download and very customizable

Thunderbird
Similarly Thunderbird is a direct replacement for Outlook Express (OE) or other email clients
It is not a great replacement for Outlook if you use all the Outlook features
Remember:
Outlook Express = free email client built into windows
Outlook = Personal Information Manager inc email, calendar, contacts, tasks, etc that comes with MS Office
Why Microsoft called them nearly the same thing when they are very different is anyone's guess
So Thunderbird just does email - you can include a calendar etc but that is getting a little tricky
Here is a link to the Thunderbird site listing some of the features and advantages
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
And here is some more details, help and FAQ
http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/

The things I like about Thunderbird in particular are:
  • Good built in filtering & searching
  • Good built in spam filter - does require some training and can work-in with your ISP spam filter too
  • Built in RSS Feed aggregator & reader
  • Easy to setup and use with multiple email accounts and identities
Once again Thunderbird is completely free and easy to download and try
Both programs do a good job of copying over your existing mail, contacts, favourites and other settings
It doesnt wipe them or delete them, just copies them across
So if you haven't already download and give them a go
You won't lose anything and can go back to your old programs if you don't like it
If anyone does have a go we would love to hear your thoughts on the differences, what yo like and what you don't
And of course if you have any questions or problems post back here for the answers!

I better go and do some work now so I will answer the question about Word, Works and Office next time

See you round the net
Cheers
MATT
