RSS is the way of the future for distributed content like newsletters, podcasts and such. in case you don't now anything about it here's some information, Also check out the Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS. Rather than a separate program like Feedreader or Thunderbird to use as a Feed Aggregator I just use Google Reader in my browser. I find this the easiest to use and you can access it from any browser. http://www.google.com/reader/view/

RSS is a tool that lets you select the kind of information you need and have it displayed on your desktop – as soon as it appears. The most widespread use for this is to follow the latest news of your choosing. But in addition to news, RSS can be used to keep track of all kinds of useful things. If it’s information and it gets updated, it’s probably available via RSS.
First, an introduction: RSS is a family of web feed formats, and stands for Really Simple Syndication. It’s an XML-based tool that lets you to subscribe to feeds from your favourite websites and receive hot-off-the-press, customised information.
But it’s not just for news. Any information source that can be split into discrete items can be syndicated via RSS, and this is where it really shines. TV guides, auction items, job vacancies, flight schedules, product releases, blog updates and French lessons – the list is endless, and setting it up is as simple as adding the right feed to your aggregator.
Feeders, Aggregators & Co.
Programs known as feed readers or aggregators grab RSS feeds from various sites and display any recent articles they find.
With thousands of sites now RSS-enabled and with more on the way, RSS has become a visible success story. HP sees a real value in being able to deliver fresh content too. Press releases, feature stories and special offers can be sent directly to interested readers via RSS feeds.
Communication made personal with RSS
At HP.com, RSS feeds are identified with a small orange button that says either RSS or XML. Although RSS/XML readers will soon be part of every browser and e-mail client, for now you need a separate reader, or a browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer 7.0 (which both integrate RSS). A variety of RSS readers are available for different platforms. Some popular aggregators include Amphetadesk (Windows®, Linux®, Mac), FeedReader (Windows) and NewsGator (Windows – integrates with Outlook).
The benefits of RSS
The benefits of using RSS are relevance, speed, completeness, convenience and privacy.
Speed: RSS feeds send notifications whenever new material is available. There’s no need to trawl numerous websites in search of information you require, saving you time and effort.
Relevance: RSS content summaries contain summary information without overwhelming you with details. Simply click on the item in the feed to access more information.
Completeness: RSS ensures that you are always up to date on topics that interest you. Every new development is reported directly in your feed, and you don't miss a thing.
Convenience: With RSS, you control the flow of information by specifically selecting content. If the quality of the content declines, you simply remove the feed from your aggregator.
Privacy: RSS eliminates the risk of receiving spam and avoids the need to join each site's email newsletter.
Regardless of how obscure your interests or profession are, RSS is a fantastic time-saver and a convenient way to get the information you need, when you need it.

RSS: The most underrated tool on the net

This is an interesting article about the nuts and bolts of modern PC security threats including virus, trojan, phishing and the new threat of rootkits. Click the link below to read the full articles

Ever felt like you’re fighting a losing battle? That sums up many people’s attitude to computing in the Internet age: despite the best efforts of security vendors and software developers alike, malware not only exists, but continues to evolve and plague computer users.
Why does malware continue to thrive? The patronising answer would be that newbie users are behaving like amateurs and ignoring basic security practice. There’s a kernel of truth in that, but it isn’t only the newbie who clicks links they shouldn’t, and it isn’t only the novice who’s fooled into running nefarious executables by technical and social-engineering techniques.
The crux of the problem is that threats have changed dramatically in recent years, with the rise in malware mirroring the rise in broadband popularity. As the number of online users grow, and the technology used to connect to the net becomes simultaneously simpler at the front end yet more complex behind the scenes, so the opportunity to make money expands. And that’s where the answer to the “why?” question can be found: no longer are viruses the hobby of the über-nerd; malware has evolved into what most IT security experts quite rightly refer to as crimeware. Scatter-gun attacks are on the way out; targeted and financially motivated strikes are the new modus operandi.
But while everyone has heard terms such as worm, trojan, phishing and rootkit bandied about, how many people actually understand how they exploit security weaknesses? By understanding how malware works, you get one step closer to stopping it.

As discussed at previous meetings and demonstrated by Ian, Acronis is some of the best imaging software available for windows. Here's a review of the newest version which is now available. Cheers MATT

Performance:

Features & Design:

Value for money:

Overall Rating:
Rating: 6 out of 6

Date: 18 September, 2007
In Short - For those who don’t own version 9, a few improvements should put this at the top of your shopping list.

True Image 9 has been a permanent fixture on the A List since it won our backup Labs a year ago. There’s no immediate visual difference in this version compared to the last, and the changes under the hood are fairly minimal too – thankfully, however, they’re all very worthwhile. Acronis has clearly listened to feedback and tweaked the user interface to focus on the options most people will need.
Realising tasks such as cloning disks and manipulating images are seldom used by less experienced users, they’ve been relegated to the side menu. The latter tasks have also been renamed: you now “mount” rather than “plug” an image.
In their place, we get more sensible everyday choices. The left-hand menu has been expanded to include common options, complete with a separate Help panel. The active backup tasks now have their own pane, along with all the tools for creating, running and editing them. Scheduling also occurs here, with options for daily, weekly, monthly or one-off backups. It can also be set to run at logon, logoff, startup or shutdown, and this can be refined to once a day for PCs with multiple users.
Backing up directly to an FTP server is now a useful option, as is application integration. While True Image 10 hasn’t achieved the Holy Grail of saving entire programs, it will store all your personal settings from a hefty list of applications in 14 wide-ranging categories. Outlook and Outlook Express are dealt with separately from the rest; it will save your archives, personal folders and user settings, as well as your Windows Address Book if you have one.
Acronis has caught up with the consumer-focused competition by making it simple to select all your music, videos and pictures for quick backup. Finally, you also have the standard option of choosing individual files and folders or just imaging the entire drive for the ultimate in data protection – a feature that still isn’t universal among standalone backup utilities.
All the rest is still present from
version 9, so if you’re familiar with the ins and outs you’ll have no difficulty adapting. The Acronis Secure Zone caters for PCs with no external storage by partitioning off a portion of your hard disk, which is isolated from the rest to guard against viruses and other malware. It won’t protect you against physical disk failure, but it’s a useful way of backing up on a budget.
The Snap Restore feature can amazingly get you back up and running in seconds after a disaster by immediately loading the essentials, while the rest of the system is gradually restored in the background. Plus, the Recovery Manager can be accessed without bootable media once it’s been enabled in Windows, so
you don’t have the headache of keeping track of recovery discs. Differential and incremental backups are available to suit your needs, and Acronis will automatically manage the size and distribution of the backup sets based on the disk space
rules you set.
Its weaknesses are few, but some still exist: the basic password protection isn’t up to the advanced encryption of most of its rivals, and you’ll still need third-party burning software to back up to DVD, although plummeting hard disk prices are rendering that less of an issue. It’s also very much a personal product; if you have more than one PC to back up you may be better suited to the Enterprise or Server editions of True Image.
Acronis True Image 10 is a fairly minor reworking of the previous version, so if you already own that the value in upgrading is debatable, despite the low price.
The other reason to upgrade would be Windows Vista compatibility – version 9 won’t work. But for anyone yet to take a step towards backing up, there’s just nothing else that comes close to matching it for power, speed and its do-it-all nature. True Image 10 offers extensive options plus the ability to image your entire PC, and this powerful combination puts it head and shoulders above the competition.

I have been using Free Download Manager (FDM) for a few years now. If you don't use Firefox (FF) then it is an essential add-on to Internet Explorer. In FF you can add the extension called Down Them All (DTA) via a plug-in. For a lot of simple file downloads this does the job for me. http://www.downthemall.net/

However FDM is a very capable program. It has also recently gone open source which means it is completely free and (if you understand this stuff) you can look through the programs code to see what it does - ensuring there are no nasties in there. It now does bit-torrent and a few other things I haven't fully checked out yet.
Here is a full feature list: Free Download Manager | Features

FDM also has a unique feedback option. When you are downloading a file it checks that file against a database of user opinions. This makes it easy to get a group of opinions on a program before you even download it. Just beware that some people mark files as a virus or awful because they don't like it - when really it is ok. e.g. Microsoft files and iTunes always get a bad rap from the trolls. Be sure to read the comments and like anything do your research before you install anything.

If you use a different download manager or use IE without a manager then you should give FDM a try

Hi all
One of our members Graham is having trouble with his installation of Quickbooks (an accounting program, like MYOB)
He recently tried to update his copy to a newer version
Not only did the update not work but he also borked his currently installed copy
Graham's copy was a valid copy of Quickbooks 7.1 which pre-dates Australian GST which was then updated to version 7.4 which is post-GST

Ok with 20-20 hindsight the first advise is Back-Up!
In this case an image of your PC (using Acronis, Ghost or similar as demonstrated at Mullies by Ian) would have saved this problem
The good news is that years of information haven't been lost - we just don't have the tools to read them again yet

OK Google is our friend here
I searched for: download Quickbooks 7.4 Australia and found the answer
https://www.quicken.com.au/Businessfinance/QuickBooks/upgradeFromPreviousVersion.aspx
this site explains the process of upgrading to newer versions from 7.1
The actual file you need to upgrade from 7.1 to 7.4 is linked here:
http://www.quicken.com.au/library/exe/QBUpdate74.exe
Install your version of 7.1 from CD then download and run this upgrade and you should be back to version 7.4 again

Graham - if you haven't already you should check out the Quicken/Quickbooks website to see if any further updates are available to you http://www.quicken.com.au/Support/downloads.aspx

Also try the Quickbooks Australian forum
http://forums.quickbooksusers.com/archive/index.php/f-12.html

Anyone looking for a new program could give TurboCash a try
http://www.turbocash.net
TurboCash is an opensource (Free!) accounting program that many people describe as a 'clone' of Quickbooks
I have never used it but I understand that it is quite good
The free version has all the features on offer but no technical support - but then I guess you don't have tech support for your old copy of Quickbooks either! :)
Like Quickbooks TurboCash is international but there are some details on customising it for Australian use
http://www.turbocash.net/wiki/index.php?title=Australia

Anyway we have probably saved Graham's bacon but if anyone has any further advice or suggestions then please feel free to reply and we will share the ideas around

Cheers - MATT

This is a brief introduction to some of the aspects of what people refer to as Web 2.0 (or Web version 2). It is really amazing what tools are available via the Internet for free

We've all heard of Web 2.0, but what does it mean? I think of it as the Interactive Internet. It encourages collaboration between users and is driving the trend towards more interactive websites.

The Internet as we have come to know it has been around for over ten years now. To date it has principally been used for searching, browsing and reading static information.

Now it is evolving into something quite different. We are now in what is being coined the “Web 2.0 era”, where the Internet is now about interactivity.

No longer do Internet users want to just look at and read a page they want to interact, leave comments, upload music or photos and be involved in the Internet community.

The Internet is no longer solely the domain of the technical expert. With the increase in user friendly interfaces, it is now possible to get involved even if you have limited technical knowledge.

What tools make up Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 can be defined as the set of technologies which enable collaboration and sharing between Internet users. These can be web pages, web-based communities or hosted services such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs and podcasts.

These tools, such as blogs, make it easier for anyone to get their material online, even if they have no knowledge of HTML.

Blogs are online diaries or journals created by individuals or companies and stored on the Internet. Blogs generally consist of text and images appearing in chronological order with the most recent entry shown at the top of the page.

Wikipedias are online encyclopedia maintained by users. They allow people to contribute to and add definitions or topics.

Social networking include sites like MySpace and Facebook. Here, people put up a public profile about themselves. They can add their favorite photos, music and website links and choose to share these with friends only or the general public.

Podcasting. A 'podcast' is an audio file or series of audio files that can be shared with others. You can subscribe to a podcast in much the same way as you subscribe to an email newsletter.

Over the last 8 years I have been buying and selling items on eBay for myself and more recently, small businesses. In that time Ive learned a few tricks to help get you maximum profit for your items with just a few tweaks during the listing process. Here is a checklist to go through when listing your items.

  • List the item on Sunday
  • Know the item you are listing
  • Research what similar items have sold for
  • Be honest with your description
  • Be realistic with what you expect to get for it
  • Avoid most eBay add-ons
  • Get a good starting bid, avoid reserves, use Buy It Now
  • List the item for maximum visibility
  • Be as descriptive as possible
  • Use quality photographs
  • Explain any flaws
  • Spell check
  • Explain shipping & handling fees up front
  • Create a disclaimer
  • Reply to all questions in a timely manner
  • Ship fast
  • Use PayPal
  • Promote your auction

List the item on Sunday. It is a proven fact that listing a standard seven day auction late Sunday afternoon into early evening will give you the best chance of a great auction selling price. More people are likely to be home and you will get the exposure of the remaining part of that day and the entire following Saturday. If you live on the east coast of the US, list it somewhere between 6 and 9pm, this will give people on the west coast ample time to see it. Ideally, you want as many people to see it in the last few hours as possible, which is when most people make the decision to buy.

Know the item you are listing
. Sounds silly, but many people dont know exactly what it is they are selling. Say for example you are selling a toy you bought for your toddler but they hate it. You threw out the box when you gave it to him, so you lost a lot of the information about it, what age group it was for, etc. Without that information, you cannot make a solid, descriptive auction. The information should be available on the manufacturer website, so search for that. Likewise, if you are selling something like a handmade wood bowl that your grandfather gave you, list that it is a handmade item and that it is one of a kind (if it truly is).

Research what similar items have sold for. Youll need to login to your eBay account to do this then go to the advanced search options. Search for already completed auctions to get an idea of what recently ending items have sold for and how much of a bidding war too place. With this information you should be able to properly gauge what your item is worth and start the auction accordingly.

Be honest with your description
. Sounds easy enough, but the number of sellers who dont give any information or very little about an items real condition can often not get as much money from their sale or have to deal with numerous questions during the auctions. If you are trying to sell a set of bookshelf speakers for example and you know that on the left side of one of them is a small mark, take a photo and make sure you note it in the description. By being honest you will not only save the aggravation of dealing with an unhappy buyer after the fact, you will be more likely to come off as a real person selling the item. Buyers like to know that they are getting something from an honest seller. If you embellish your listing you are only selling yourself short. Likewise, be sure that you mention other details that some may care about. Often times when selling used clothing it is a good idea to mention that your home is smoke free and pet free, only do this if it is indeed true.

Be realistic with what you want to get for the item. After youve done your research on what similar items have sold for, be realistic with the condition of the item you are selling and how much you can get for it. Sometimes people shoot for the stars and end up not selling the item; by not selling it you waste money in listing fees. If you are not comfortable with the price at which recent auctions have ended, dont list your item. There is a chance the market for that particular item will have an upswing, just as likely as it could have a downswing though.

Avoid most eBay add-ons
. There are dozens of options when listing your auction, you can see all the sellers fees here. Most of them will not get you more money in the end, such as fancy templates, making the title line bold and putting a funny little outline around your listing in search engines. Unless you have something really rare, Id avoid these.

Get a good starting bid, avoid reserves and use Buy It Now. Low starting prices attract buyers, reserves scare them away, and so Id avoid using them unless you really need to get a certain amount for the item. Listing your item at $1.00 with no reserve will more then likely draw attention but be aware that it might only sell for $1.00. Over the years, the Buy It Now option has become more popular; I personally prefer to buy auctions with them. There is a small fee associated with it, but auctions that list with the BIN add-on usually sell faster.

List the item for maximum visibility. eBay offers several add-on features for a fee to get your item to stand out better in the search results, some of these are worth looking into some are not. The only one Id ever really consider is the thumbnail view of your item to the left of the text link. What you can do for free is use all the space available for your auction title. Currently eBay gives 24 (I think) characters, use all of them. Additionally, use the underscore to separate words instead of a blank space. Why you ask? The modern type is dynamic to each letter; the lower case letter l takes up less horizontal space then the lowercase letter w. By using the underscore instead of spaces you will essentially widen the auction title and possibly get it to spill onto a second line for free. An example can be seen here:

New Playstation 3 Core System With 2 Controllers
New_Playstation_3_Core_System_With_2_Controllers

Not only is the wider one easier to read, it will attract more viewers. There is also an add-on when listing your auction called Gallery, it is a $0.35 add on feature. While I am against most of these add-ons because they can really cut into your profits, this is one that is worth it. Why? Because it will show the buyer what your item looks like from the search results field. This can be very handy for many different types of auctions, in addition to drawing more attention to the listing.

Be as descriptive as possible. If the item is of electronic nature, say a home stereo, see if the manufacturer still has the specs listed on their site and either link to it or copy over the important ones. In addition, list your personal experience with the item, how it works, functions, etc. Youll want to make a point of listing everything positive you can about the item. In some cases, Ive also listed why Im selling some items, depending on what it is. Recently I sold a piece of luggage that I purchased in California on vacation that was needed to haul home all the stuff I bought. It was used once as a carry on and was in as new condition. This information was listed in the auction. Also take the time to list the environment the items lived in. If for example you were selling clothing, even new with tags on it, list in the auction that the item is new with tags and if applicable, that it comes from a smoke free, animal free home, kept in a cool, dry closet. Dont lie here!
Explain any flaws. Take photos of scratches, dents, scuffs, wear, etc. No matter how small it is, disclose the information in both photographs and pictures. This lets the seller know how are trying to be honest and up front about the item. You dont have to go into full detail about how everything happened, just be sure to list them.

Use quality photographs. If it is something small, get a piece of white poster board from a local Wal-Mart type store and place it on your kitchen table. Put the item on it and turn on all the lights in that room. Take a few pictures of it making sure nothing else is being shown but the item and the white background. If the item is fairly small, look for a macro setting on your camera and use that. For any given item, 3-6 quality photographs will go a long way. Resize them down to be used on the web; an easy way to do this is with the freeware program Irfanview (Windows only, Mac users can use iPhoto). Once open, go to Image > Resize / Resample and click the 800×600 option, then OK. Save these to a new location. Since eBay only gives you one photo for free, use a free web photo hosting solution for the other images to be listed in your auction. Some of these sites are:

They all provide code to place them into eBay auctions and are free to use. Ive been using xs.to for sometime and never had a problem. Simple and straight forward.

Spell check. Take two minutes and reread what you wrote, make sure it makes sense and there are no spelling errors. Not only will this make the auction more valid for your potential buyer, it is the right thing to do.

Explain shipping & handling fees up front. When listing your auction, eBay has the boxes you can use for shipping, flat rate, by weight, etc. I think it is also worth listing in the auction itself what the shipping & handling fees are, where you will and wont ship to, what the insurance options are, etc. My experience is that buyers prefer flat rate shipping, so you will need to determine what your item weighs packed up and what the rate is from who you will use as a shipper (UPS, USPS, FedEx, etc.). I usually add $1-4 to that to cover my costs of the box, packing material and gas to drive to where Im mailing it from. Insurance is an option in the listing process, you the seller decide if you want to make it required, optional or not available. I usually use the optional portion, 50% of the time the buyer will want it, and the other half they wont.

Create a disclaimer. At the bottom of all my auctions I use something similar to the following:

I have listed this item to the best of my ability. If you have any questions, please contact me with at least 24 hours prior to the auction ending so I may reply to them. Payment is expected within three days of the auction ending, PayPal is the preferred method. The item will be shipped within one business day after payment has been received. Insurance is optional, however it is recommended. Please leave positive feedback for me when the item arrives, I will do the same for after you have left feedback for me. If for some reason there is an issue with the item when it arrives, please contact me ASAP to address it.

Reply to all questions in a timely manner
. Common sense here folks. Dont list an item and go on vacation. Do check your email and eBay account at least twice a day to look for questions. Reply to them in a timely manner and address each question to the best of your ability.

Ship fast. If you can, ship an item the day of payment or the following day. This will help build a positive feedback rating for you as a fast shipper, something a lot of buyers look for. No one wants to pay for something on Monday to find out it hasnt shipped out till Friday. Take this into consideration when listing your item.

Use PayPal. PayPal allows instant payment and the ability for you the seller to receive credit card payments. By doing so, you have now enabled someone who may not have the cash to purchase your item to do so by putting it on their credit card. Additionally, it allows you to track payments and create shipping labels for both USPS and UPS. Using the built in option for shipping labels will also send notification to the buyer that the item has shipped and what the tracking number is, one less thing you need to do. There are too many instances where checks and money orders bounce, get lost in the mail, etc. to make them worthwhile. Additionally, it adds time until the buyer receives their item.

Promote your auction. On any given day there are millions of items listed. Just having a clever title isnt good enough anymore. You need to tell people you have an auction. Get on the social network of your choice, like MySpace and make a blog or bulletin post announcing your auctions. Dont go around spamming people, but once when you list the auction and another the day before the auction ends can help drive extra traffic to your auctions.

Lastly, build relationships. Use the feedback options on all auctions, making sure to emphasize what the buyer has done right, using terms like fast payment or painless transaction. This will make you seem much more human and more buyers will want to deal with you. Should have an issue, do everything in your power to resolve it as fast as possible.

Improve Battery Life of Your Tablet or Laptop Computer

You may have a very high-end laptop with lots of RAM, latest processor chip and an extremely powerful graphics card but still the battery inside your laptop computer or Tablet PC remains the weakest link – the average battery life is anywhere between three and four hours for most notebook models.

Whether we are traveling on the road or waiting in the airport lounge or taking a long flight (where there are no power plugs to recharge the battery), our most common wish is that the laptop battery should last as long as possible so that we remain connected, informed and productive.

Here are some simple yet effective tips that will help you extract the maximum juice out of your laptop batter per charge (though nothing substitutes carrying a spare full-charged battery):

Dim the Bright LCD Screen – Turn down the brightness level of your laptop screen to the lowest value possible. Similarly, lower the screen resolution and color depth as they again put stress on the display card and therefore consume additional power of your battery.

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Scanning - If you are using the laptop for offline work, like composing emails or giving final touches to that PowerPoint presentation, there’s no point checking for Wi-Fi network in your area when you are not going to use it anyway. Most laptops have shortcut keys to instantly disable wireless networking.

Disable Background Processes – You could have several maintenance related processes running on your hard-drive which can be turned off temporarily. Examples include the desktop search software that’s configured to index new files on the fly or any IM clients sitting in the system tray or any scheduled tasks that auto-run at pre-defined intervals.

Defragment the Hard Disk – Defragmenting will try to put all the piece of a file in a sequence so it will take less effort to see a file. You may notice a marginal jump in computing speed after defragmentation plus it also helps in extending the very precious life of your battery.

Turn off the Auto-save document feature of Microsoft Office and other applications. Programs that are run from a CD or DVD can be copied to and run from the hard drive, which typically consumes less power than an optical drive.

Also remember to fully charge a new battery pack before carrying it with you on an important business trip. New batteries should be fully charged and discharged a few times before they work to their maximum capacity.

Kiss YouTube offers an innovative approach for downloading video clips from YouTube. No browser bookmarklets, no software to install, just remember the KISS "Keep It Sweet & Simple" principle.
While you are watching a video clip on the YouTube website, just add the word "kiss" to the video URL in your browser address bar and hit enter. The video is ready to be saved on your computer in FLV format.
For instance, if the Youtube URI is something like youtube.com/watch?v=ls1954aa, you can download the clip by adding the word "kiss" in front of the youtube.com domain name. Hence the final address becomes kissyoutube.com/watch?v=ls1954aa which will have the link to save that clip.
