Hi all
One of our members Graham is having trouble with his installation of Quickbooks (an accounting program, like MYOB)
He recently tried to update his copy to a newer version
Not only did the update not work but he also borked his currently installed copy
Graham's copy was a valid copy of Quickbooks 7.1 which pre-dates Australian GST which was then updated to version 7.4 which is post-GST

Ok with 20-20 hindsight the first advise is Back-Up!
In this case an image of your PC (using Acronis, Ghost or similar as demonstrated at Mullies by Ian) would have saved this problem
The good news is that years of information haven't been lost - we just don't have the tools to read them again yet

OK Google is our friend here
I searched for: download Quickbooks 7.4 Australia and found the answer
https://www.quicken.com.au/Businessfinance/QuickBooks/upgradeFromPreviousVersion.aspx
this site explains the process of upgrading to newer versions from 7.1
The actual file you need to upgrade from 7.1 to 7.4 is linked here:
http://www.quicken.com.au/library/exe/QBUpdate74.exe
Install your version of 7.1 from CD then download and run this upgrade and you should be back to version 7.4 again

Graham - if you haven't already you should check out the Quicken/Quickbooks website to see if any further updates are available to you http://www.quicken.com.au/Support/downloads.aspx

Also try the Quickbooks Australian forum

Anyone looking for a new program could give TurboCash a try
http://www.turbocash.net
TurboCash is an opensource (Free!) accounting program that many people describe as a 'clone' of Quickbooks
I have never used it but I understand that it is quite good
The free version has all the features on offer but no technical support - but then I guess you don't have tech support for your old copy of Quickbooks either! :)
Like Quickbooks TurboCash is international but there are some details on customising it for Australian use

Anyway we have probably saved Graham's bacon but if anyone has any further advice or suggestions then please feel free to reply and we will share the ideas around

Cheers - MATT
